When people choose their best friends they usually evaluate by them by degree of loyalty, quality advice giving, and sense of adventure. When you need cheering up, you can turn to them for some much-needed laughter. When you’re feeling lonely, you can turn to them for support. That being said, what if your best friend isn’t human at all? It’s quite possible that television could be fulfilling your desire for not only entertainment but companionship as well — and here are 12 tell-tale signs that may very well be the case.

1. When you’re stressed out you would rather turn to your top shows for comfort than to chocolate or your go-to booty call.

Let’s be real: Often, when other people are trying to get you to chill the heck out, they only make things worse. Television, on the other hand, takes you to a whole new world and mellows you out. Truth be told, you are sometimes happier to see those familiar faces on your screen than the faces of your family members. You have nothing against the people you love, but sometimes it’s nice just to experience the warm glow of familiarity without having to converse with another being.

2. Most of your spare time is spent watching it.

Instead of going out or hanging out with your friends, you will stay in to catch up on the greatest series to ever air. It’s what you feel comfortable doing and time flies by while you’re doing it. The rare times you do go out you often try to find a way to wiggle back home to watch your shows because you need to know what happens next. Sometimes, even a bit of binge-watching puts you at ease. Why? Because going on a fictional adventure is way better than hitting up that third pub in a row.

3. Some of your best life and love advice is actually inspired by fictional relationships. #NoShame.

While most people talk about their woes to their friends to figure out what they should do, you listen to characters you think are wise beyond their years. Sure,  television can sometimes be home to terrible advice and decisions since quality storylines require d-r-a-m-a. But why can’t we learn from that? You probably trust that your favorite character knows how to handle a stressful situation better than even your parents can.

4. You feel like no one else quite gets you like your favorite program does.

Maybe you’re just surrounded by people who are very different from you. Or you just haven’t met people who understand your humor, personality, or fashion sense. Either way, you feel as though you can truly identify with characters from your favorite show and you much rather spend time getting to know them.

5. When the season ends you feel lost, cold, and full of sadness.

You know it’s inevitable and it comes every year, but it still hits you like a ton of bricks when a season ends. A big hole is left in your life and you usually try to fill it by binge watching the past seasons. It lessens the pain, but there is still nothing like having a new episode to look forward to.

6. You have inside jokes that only you and your fandom friends understand.

Just like how best friends have their own language and secret handshakes, your humor is pretty much inspired by your favorite shows. You quote funny one liners from your shows all day long, and some folks might look at you like you’re crazy for it. But nothing makes you happier than finding another fan who gets the references you love to make.

7. No other drinking buddy compares to the greatest characters you’ve ever met.

Real drinking buddies can kill your buzz by starting fights or breaking down in tears. But your fictional characters never let you down because they know they know how to bring the drama in the best possible way. Dancing to a killer soundtrack? Blast those tunes! Indulging in a couple glasses of wine? Get down with your lush self! Living life to the fullest? Let’s do this! You know you’re always in for an unforgettable time. Obviously, they can’t hold your hair back but it still seems like a pretty good trade off.

8. They also make wonderful meal-time buddies.

Some people enjoy conversation over lunch and dinner, but others much prefer to nibble on their snacks while watching their favorite shows. The possibilities are incredible: You can meet up with an all-knowing pal on the cooking channel who can teach you a few tricks in the kitchen, or you can watch hilarious characters professor their fondness for cheese, sandwiches, and sweets. You don’t feel self-conscious eating in front of the television — you can indulge to your heart’s content. Sometimes, you even get down with your bad self and eat ice cream right out of the pint!

9. When you need fashion advice you pretty much steal your favorite character’s wardrobe.

If you’re lucky, you might have a friend who has a closet stuffed with gorgeous clothes — and who also happens to be very generous. But for some of us, our most stylish friends are the ones we see on screen. You take fashion pointers from your favorite characters and skip anyone else’s advice. Considering they’re setting trends and own the most spectacular accessories you’ve ever seen, they seem to know what they’re doing.

10. Anyone who wants to get with you has to be on the same page when it comes to your viewing habits.

People might have different taste and that’s okay. But if someone loves trashing your show, or tries to get you to turn the channel on a new episode then you’re not above rethinking your friendship with them. Television is just that important to you and if someone else doesn’t get that, then that’s their loss.

11. Finding out your favorite show is coming to an end is what you suspect death feels like.

Just like how you take a season ending hard, you take cancellations to heart. You go through all the stages of grieving to process the news. You might try to start fan campaigns to get the show back. Either way you take this way harder than the average fan because you feel like you’re losing characters you’ve spent years getting to know.

12. And even when your favorite show makes you cry and breaks your heart? You still love them anyway and will forever cherish the good times you shared together.

Friendship is all about trust and compromise. And even though your BFF infuriates you at times and has his/her fair share of confusing storylines flaws, no one else can make you laugh, cry, or swoon quite the way they can. The relationship you have with them is deep and meaningful, and you wouldn’t change it for the world.
